We need simple examples to illustrate these two things.

These flags control which agents an LlmAgent can hand the conversation to using transfer_to_agent.

For example, with this tree:

coordinator (LlmAgent)

Set the flags on researcher:

For example, disallow_transfer_to_peers=True is useful when the researcher should send work back through the coordinator instead of handing it directly to the writer.

These settings restrict the available transfer_to_agent targets; they do not make the model call that tool. They also do not prevent transfers to the researcher's own sub-agents. This example assumes ordinary conversational agents, with an LlmAgent parent.

The parent flag also affects the next user turn: after a coordinator-to-researcher exchange, disallow_transfer_to_parent=True prevents the researcher from remaining the active agent, so the runner returns to the coordinator in this example.

The target selection is implemented in _get_transfer_targets.

I built the exact tree they describe and asked _get_transfer_targets directly. google-adk 2.8.0, no LLM, no network — just the function that decides what transfer_to_agent is allowed to name.

Reading it in plain words:

• disallow_transfer_to_peers=True — the researcher can still go back up to the coordinator, but can no longer hand work sideways to the writer. This is the hub-and-spoke shape: everything routes through the coordinator.
• disallow_transfer_to_parent=True — the reverse: it can hand off sideways to the writer, but cannot bounce back up.
• Both True — the researcher is a dead end for transfers.

The caveat that bites people, also confirmed by run. Give the researcher its own sub-agent, set both flags to True:

both flags True, researcher has one sub_agent -> ['grandchild']

The flags say nothing about an agent's own children — those stay reachable. _get_transfer_targets (agent_transfer.py L166–199) builds the list in three parts: own sub-agents first, then parent (gated by disallow_transfer_to_parent), then peers (gated by disallow_transfer_to_peers). Only the last two are gated at all.

Two more things visible in that same function on 2.8.0, worth knowing before you rely on the table:

• Sub-agents whose mode is single_turn or task are excluded from the target list regardless of any flag (L186–191).
• disallow_transfer_to_parent also affects who stays active for the next user turn. runners.py L2179–2187 walks the chain upward and returns False the moment it meets an agent with disallow_transfer_to_parent=True — which is why, after a coordinator→researcher exchange, that flag sends the next turn back to the coordinator instead of leaving the researcher in charge.

And the boundary already stated above, which I'll restate because it is the single most common surprise: these flags only shape the menu of transfer_to_agent targets. They do not make the model call the tool, and they are not a routing guarantee.
